Bridgetymology – appreciate

APPRECIATE IS A WORD SYNONYMOUS WITH BEING THANKFUL AND GRATEFUL. A WORD WIDELY USED AND BRINGS IN SO MUCH POSITIVITY IN SOMEONE’S LIFE. AND WHILE THIS MEANS BEING THANKFUL BECAUSE YOU VALUE SOMETHING OR SOMEONE. THE OTHER MEANING OF ‘APPRECIATE’ ALSO HAS TO DO WITH VALUE, VALUE THAT IS EQUIVALENT TO A NUMBER.

AND TO UNDERSTAND THE WORD ‘APPRECIATE’ BETTER, LET ME GO DEEPER INTO ITS ORIGIN AND LET’S LEARN SOMETHING NEW.

etymology

APPRECIATE WAS FORMED FROM THE LATIN ROOTS AP-, PRETIUM, AND -ATUS.

AP- IS A FORM OF THE LATIN ROOT AD-, WHICH MEANS ‘TOWARD’, AS IN ADVANTAGEOUS, MEANING TOWARDS A BETTER VANTAGE POINT.

PRETIUM IS THE LATIN WORD WHICH EVOLVED TO MEAN ALL OF THE FOLLOWING: “BRIBE, PAY, HIRE, WAGE, REWARD, PUNISHMENT, RANSOM, WORTH, PRICE, VALUE OR COST”.

AND -ATUS IS A LATIN ROOT USED TO FORM ADJECTIVES FROM NOUNS INDICATING THE POSSESSION OF A THING OR QUALITY.

SO LATE LATIN’S APPRETIATUS MEANT “TOWARDS THE POSSESSION OF PRICE OR VALUE”. EVENTUALLY THIS WAS CARRIED FORWARD INTO OUR MODERN ENGLISH MEANING OF THE WORD APPRECIATE.

perspective

I CHOSE THIS WORD, AS THANKSGIVING IS IN OUR RECENT PAST. AND AROUND THIS TIME OF YEAR, I THINK MANY OF US ARE REMINDED HOW MUCH EXPRESSING APPRECIATION FOR OUR LOVED ONES CAN MAKE THOSE RELATIONSHIPS GROW, AND HOW HAVING APPRECIATION FOR THE GOOD THINGS IN OUR LIVES, CAN MAKE THOSE THINGS GROW. AFTER MONTHS AND MONTHS OF MANDATED ISOLATION, THE MEANING OF THIS HOLIDAY, WHERE WE GATHER AND SHARE A MEAL WITH OUR LOVED ONES, FEELS SO IMMENSELY NECESSARY. I DON’T THINK ANYONE WOULD ARGUE WITH ME THAT APPRECIATION IS A GOOD THING.

AT THE MOST BASIC LEVEL, FEELING APPRECIATED LIFTS PEOPLE UP AND LETS PEOPLE FEEL SAFE, WHICH ENABLES THEM TO DO THEIR HIGHEST AND BEST WORK. WHEN WE FEEL OUR OWN VALUE IS AT RISK, THAT WORRY BECOMES PROCCUPYING AND DISTRACTS US FROM CREATING VALUE. IN ANOTHER STUDY, WORKERS WHO FELT UNAPPRECIATED OR WORSE BY THEIR BOSSES WERE 30% MORE LIKELY TO DEVELOP HEART DISEASE.

AUTHOR DALE CARNEGIE, OF LEADERSHIP CLASSIC BOOK HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE, NOTED THROUGH SEVERAL STUDIES THAT PRAISE IS A MORE EFFECTIVE MOTIVATOR THAN CRITICISM. WHAT I’M GETTING AT HERE IS… IF THIS BRIDGETYMOLOGY ACCOMPLISHES ANYTHING, I HOPE IT MIGHT REMIND YOU THAT THE NEXT TIME YOU THINK A POSITIVE THOUGHT ABOUT SOMEONE– SHARE IT WITH THEM! WHETHER THEY ARE YOUR PARTNER, YOUR CHILD, YOUR FRIEND, A COWORKER, OR A STRANGER IN A GROCERY STORE… APPRECIATION QUITE LITERALLY BRINGS US ALL CLOSER TO GROWING VALUE.
