intuition broken down

THE WORD INTUITION COMES FROM THE LATIN VERB INTUERI TRANSLATED AS “CONSIDER” OR FROM THE LATE MIDDLE ENGLISH WORD INTUIT, “TO CONTEMPLATE”.

INTUITION IS A FORM OF KNOWLEDGE THAT APPEARS IN CONSCIOUSNESS WITHOUT OBVIOUS DELIBERATION. IT IS NOT MAGICAL BUT RATHER A FACULTY IN WHICH “HUNCHES” ARE GENERATED BY THE UNCONSCIOUS MIND RAPIDLY SIFTING THROUGH PAST EXPERIENCE AND CUMULATIVE KNOWLEDGE.

LIKE IT’S MANY SYNONYMS, “INTUITION” HAS BEEN COINED A A GREAT VARIETY OF DIFFERENT THINGS, RANGING FROM FROM THE SIMPLE AND COMMON DISTINCTION OF GUT FEELINGS TO THE MORE COMPLEX DEFINITIONS OF DIRECT ACCESS TO UNCONSCIOUS KNOWLEDGE, UNCONSCIOUS COGNITION, INNER SENSING, INNER INSIGHT TO UNCONSCIOUS PATTERN-RECOGNITION AND THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND SOMETHING INSTINCTIVELY, WITHOUT THE NEED FOR CONSCIOUS REASONING.

ANOTHER ROOT TO CONSIDER WHEN BREAKING DOWN THE INTUITION, IS THE ENGLISH ROOT INTUIT, MEANING TO CONTEMPLATE.  INTUIT’S 18TH CENTURY DEFINITION IS TO INSTRUCT OR TO TEACH.  WHEN CONSIDERED TOGETHER, THE ROOTS OF OUR STAR OF THE SHOW SUPPLEMENT THE MODERN DEFINITION OF INTUITION TO ALSO REMIND US THAT THE WORD ITSELF ORIGINALLY MEANT “TO TEACH”… THEREFORE OUR GUT FEELINGS ARE NOT JUST EVIDENCE OF ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE THROUGH EXPERIENCES, BUT ACQUIRED LESSONS OVER TIME.

LET’S GO BACK TO CONSIDERING INTUITION AS A SCIENCE BECAUSE I REALLY WANT TO ADDRESS THE MEANING BEHIND THE TERM GUT FEELING AND WHY IT’S SO INTERCHANGEABLE WITH INTUITION… SCIENTISTS HAVE REPEATEDLY DEMONSTRATED HOW INFORMATION CAN REGISTER ON THE BRAIN WITHOUT CONSCIOUS AWARENESS AND POSITIVELY INFLUENCE DECISION-MAKING AND OTHER BEHAVIOR. SIGNIFICANT, YES, BUT THERE IS MORE TO THE STORY…

THE GUT-BRAIN CONNECTION IS NO JOKE; IT CAN LINK FEELINGS TO STOMACH PROBLEMS AND VICE VERSA. CONSIDER THE  “GUT-WRENCHING” EXPERIENCE? OR SITUATIONS THAT MAKE YOU “FEEL NAUSEOUS”? HAVE YOU EVER FELT “BUTTERFLIES” IN YOUR STOMACH? THESE EXPRESSIONS ARE USED FOR GOOD REASON: THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT IS SENSITIVE TO EMOTION. ANGER, ANXIETY, SADNESS, ELATION — ALL OF THESE FEELINGS (AND OTHERS) CAN TRIGGER SYMPTOMS IN THE GUT.

perspective

LET ME CLOSE BY SAYING… OUR INTUITION IS A GIFT. THE ABILITY OF THE UNCONSCIOUS MIND TO SIFT THROUGH PAST EXPERIENCE AND CUMULATIVE KNOWLEDGE GIVES US A NUDGE, A FEELING, AND EVEN A WARNING ON WHAT TO DO NEXT OR WHAT HAPPENS.

AND NO MATTER HOW IT PRESENTS ITSELF, IT SERVES AS OUR INNER COMPASS THAT POINTS US TO A DIRECTION.

SO LET’S RECLAIM THE GIFT. IT’S THE FINGERPRINT OF ALL OUR LIFE LESSONS IMPRINTING THEMSELVES INTO OUR BODY’S BY WAY OF LIVED AND FELT EXPERIENCES.
