Bridgetymology – Opportunity

THE WORD OPPORTUNITY IS A VERY FAVORABLE WORD. IT IS CLOSELY RELATED TO THE WORD CHANCE. A CHANCE TO DO SOMETHING THAT CAN LEAD TO SUCCESS.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL HEAR ABOUT THE HISTORICAL ORIGIN OF THE WORD, HOW IT IS DEFINED, AND HOW IT’S DEFINITION GREW OVER TIME TO INCLUDE THE VARIOUS MEANINGS OF THE WORD.

HERE AT BRIDGET, WE’RE HUGE FANS OF EXPANDING OUR VOCABULARY AND BECOMING BETTER COMMUNICATORS. THAT IS WHY TODAY, ASHA BREAKS DOWN THE WORD ‘OPPORTUNITY’.

define opportunity

MERRIAM WEBSTER DEFINES OPPORTUNITY AS:

1: A FAVORABLE JUNCTURE OF CIRCUMSTANCES THE HALT PROVIDED AN OPPORTUNITY FOR REST AND REFRESHMENT.

2: A GOOD CHANCE FOR ADVANCEMENT OR PROGRESS.

etymology of opportunity

OPPORTUNITY IS COMPOSED OF THE ORIGINAL LATIN ROOTS OB- AND PORTUS. OB- MEANING “IN THE DIRECTION OF” AND PORTUS MEANING “A HARBOR”.

SO QUITE LITERALLY OPPORTUNE MEANS IN THE DIRECTION OF A HARBOR, PORT, OR OPENING. WHAT STRIKES ME ABOUT THIS VISUAL, OF A BOAT CAPTAIN AND CREW ADJUSTING SAILS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNE WIND, IS THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO SO WITHOUT FIRST BUILDING THE SKILLS OF NAVIGATION, ENGINEERING, LEADERSHIP AND TEAMWORK TO GET THEM INTO POSITION IN THE FIRST PLACE. WHEN WE HEAR THE PHRASE”WHEN OPPORTUNITY STRIKES” IT CAN OFTEN FEEL LIKE IT’S A MATTER OF SIMPLE LUCK. IT’S EASY TO ASSUME THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST LUCKY TO RECEIVE MORE OPPORTUNITIES IN LIFE, AND THAT THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.

HOWEVER, THIS VISUAL OF SAILORS ADJUSTING THEIR SAILS AS SOON AS THEY RECOGNIZE AN ADVANTAGEOUS WIND IS SO HELPFUL BECAUSE IT ILLUSTRATES HOW IMPORTANT PREPARATION FOR OPPORTUNITY IS. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW MANY OPPORTUNITIES YOU RECEIVE IF YOU’VE DONE NO WORK TO BE READY TO RECOGNIZE THEM, YOU ARE BOUND TO FAIL.

perspective

OPPORTUNITIES DON’T COME OFTEN. AND JUST LIKE IT’S ORIGIN MEANING ‘IN THE DIRECTION OF HARBOR’, OPPORTUNITY DIRECTS YOU TO SUCCESS. BUT IN ORDER TO SUCCEED, YOU ALSO HAVE TO PREPARE AND BE READY WHENEVER THAT OPPORTUNITY COMES.

HOWEVER, WE SHOULDN’T ALWAYS JUST WAIT FOR OPPORTUNITIES. THERE’S THIS SAYING, ‘IF OPPORTUNITY DOESN’T KNOCK, BUILD A DOOR’. THIS IS ME SAYING, GO AFTER YOUR DREAMS, BECAUSE SOMETIMES THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITY IS WHEN YOU DECIDE TO CREATE IT.
