origin of the word passion

PASSION IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF A WORD WHOSE ORIGINAL MEANING SEEMS QUITE REMOVED FROM ITS COMMON USAGES IN CONTEXT TODAY. THE ROOT OF PASSION IS THE LATIN “PATI” MEANING ‘TO SUFFER’, ALSO MORE BROADLY “TO ALLOW, PERMIT, UNDERGO, OR ENDURE”. PATI EVOLVED INTO LATE LATIN’S AND EARLY FRENCH’S  “PASSIO”, AND FINALLY INTO MIDDLE ENGLISH’S “PASSION.”

AND FINALLY, CLICHE, AS IT SOUNDS BUT THE MOST COMMON MEANING OF THIS WORD YOU’LL HEAR, IS –  PASSION IN LOVE OR LOVE-MAKING. THE PASSIONATE PURSUIT OF A HOBBY, INTEREST, OR CAREER. THE WAY I SEE THIS MEANING CONNECTED TO THE ORIGINAL MEANING “TO SUFFER” IS THAT THE PASSION YOU HAVE FOR SOMETHING IS WORTH SUFFERING FOR. THE NEXT TIME SOMEONE ASKS YOU WHAT YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT, IN A JOB INTERVIEW OR DATE, MAYBE YOU WILL STOP AND THINK ABOUT WHAT GIVES YOU FEELINGS THAT DRIVE YOU TO ACTION? WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO SUFFER FOR?

follow your passion…

THE LAST TIME YOU HEARD SOMEONE TELL YOU TO ‘FOLLOW YOUR PASSION FOR YOUR CAREER, I DOUBT YOU TOOK IT TO MEAN ‘FOLLOW SUFFERING’, HUH? AND I CAN TELL YOU FOR SURE THAT WHEN MY HUSBAND ANDREW EATS PASSIONFRUIT (WEIRDLY, HIS FAVORITE!), HE LOOKS LIKE HE IS ANYTHING BUT SUFFERING. BUT AS WE FOLLOW THE PATH OF THE ETYMOLOGY OF PASSION, MORE CONNECTIONS APPEAR.

definition of passion

ACCORDING TO MERRIAM-WEBSTER, PASSION IS A NOUN DERIVED FROM THE ADJECTIVE ‘RESILIENT’ MEANING:

  1. THE FIRST RECORDED USE OF THE WORD PASSION WAS IN THE 13TH CENTURY AND WAS IN THE CONTEXT OF THAT MEANING TO SUFFER.

  2. IT IS THE STATE OR CAPACITY OF BEING ACTED ON BY EXTERNAL AGENTS OR FORCES.

  3. PASSION EXPANDS IT TO MEAN “EMOTION”. THIS IS CLOSER TO THE WAYS WE USE IT TODAY!

  4. STATES THAT PASSION MEANS LOVE. ARDENT AFFECTION, DESIRE OR DEEP INTEREST, DEVOTION TO A PERSON, ACTIVITY, OBJECT, OR CONCEPT.

passionfruit anyone?

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING WHY IT IS CALLED PASSION FRUIT… YOU’D THINK IT WAS NAMED FOR THE APHRODISIACAL QUALITIES OF THE FRUIT THAT ORIGINATED IN BRAZIL. BUT NO! DEVOUT CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES IN BRAZIL IN THE LATE 1500S GAVE THE PASSIONFRUIT ITS NAME AFTER SEEING WHAT THEY INTERPRETED AS SYMBOLS OF CHRIST’S PASSION IN THE FRUITS’ SHAPE AND DESIGN.
