“SOMETIMES YOU JUST GET A CLEAR YES OR NO OR A GUT FEELING. IF YOUR GUT TELLS YOU SOMETHING IS OFF, THAT IS YOUR DEEPER SOURCE OF WISDOM THAT YOU’RE GONNA BE USING FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.” – KATIE WEE

IN 2017, KATIE WEE CAME FORWARD TO THE POLICE ABOUT SEXUAL ABUSE BY HER BALLET TEACHER THAT HAD HAPPENED TO HER AS A CHILD. HER ABUSER WAS ARRESTED IN 2018 AND OVER THREE YEARS LATER, HE FINALLY PLED GUILTY TO MOLESTATION CHARGES FOR HER AND ANOTHER VICTIM. HE’S CURRENTLY SERVING A 20-YEAR PRISON SENTENCE FOR HIS CRIME.

IN THIS EPISODE, KATIE SHARES HER EXPERIENCES AND ADVICE FOR GIRLS AND WOMEN IN A SIMILAR SITUATION.

always remember

WHEN A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER SHARES WITH YOU THAT THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED SEXUAL ASSAULT, IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO RESPOND AND KNOW WHAT TO SAY. WE ADVISE YOU TO ATTEMPT TO BE AS ENCOURAGING AND NONJUDGMENTAL AS YOU CAN BE AND UNDERSTAND HOW DIFFICULT IT CAN BE FOR A SURVIVOR TO DISCLOSE TO SOMEONE THEY CARE ABOUT.

TELL THEM WHERE TO GO FOR ASSISTANCE, WHERE TO GO FOR MEDICAL ATTENTION, OR HOW TO REPORT AN INCIDENT TO THE UNIVERSITY AND POLICE, BUT MOST OF THE TIME, LISTENING IS THE BEST KIND OF SUPPORT.

reach out

DON’T BE AFRAID TO REACH OUT. IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT. SOMEONE IS WILLING TO HELP. GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO PROCESS, GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO UNDERSTAND, AND GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO ACCEPT. THEN REACH OUT.

KNOW THAT THINGS HAPPEN AND THAT THOSE THINGS ARE INEVITABLE. THESE THINGS MAY BREAK YOU APART AND MAY HURT YOU INSIDE, BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT LIFE CONTINUES AND YOU CAN STILL BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE.
